Two
men drink side by side in the heart of Tbilisi's sprawling street market.
People gather here to sell home-grown vegetables and fruits, drinks, clothes,
and many other things. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the
breakdown of its trading system, most people have had to resort to new
ways to make ends meet. |

Tbilisi
is one of the former Soviet Union's most pleasant cities, and strolling
the long boulevards is a lovely way to discover it. |

from above. The natural beauty of its setting, and the greenness of the
city give a wonderful first impression. |

5,000
metre Mount Kazbek towers over the town of Kazbegi near the border with
North Ossetia in the Russian Federation. At 2,200 metres a church is visible
at centre left. Fiercely superstitious, the local residents objected so
strongly to a cable car to the church erected by an outside group that
is was dismantled. |

fortress towers are common in the communities of the Caucasus Mountains,
enabling the inhabitants to see invaders and lock themselves in. (Mount
